Moving to a new city is a life-changing event. So is giving birth to a child. And so is getting married. Significant events, all of these.

But then there are subtler events. Like building good daily habits. Exercising and meditating every day. Calling your mother every day. These habits may not seem as grand as moving to a new city, but in the long run, they turn your life upside down.

Writing every day is one such habit.

As someone who has been writing for years, my life has changed for the better. In this article, let’s talk about that, shall we?

1. Your writing gets better

We live in a world where we are expected to write to accomplish goals. Whether to build an audience (which we will cover later) or to win over a client, writing is always looked at as a tool to achieve something. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Or is it?

It isn’t. However, I have learned that while keeping a goal is fine, the mere act of writing daily improves our writing by leaps and bounds. And isn’t that a good enough reason to write every day?

The act of writing (and publishing) every day changes us

As we write every day, we get feedback. On some days, the feedback hurts. However, we get new data to make our writing better.

(On another note, if we ever get into a fight and you feel the need to embarrass me, just pull out the stuff I wrote a few years back. Cringe!)

2. Clarity of thought

When we write, we are essentially teaching. For me, it’s Marketing and Storytelling. Writing helps me wrestle through difficult concepts in my mind and gain some insight. The mere act of putting words on paper makes me a better Marketer.

Want to learn German? Start a blog on German and document your journey.

Want to learn to code? Cooking? Knitting? Start writing.

3. Write to build relationships

While I am not a fan of ‘Building Followers’, I am a big believer in building relationships.

Will writing make you go viral?

It probably will. But that’s not the point. The goal is to use writing to build deep relationships with our audience and improve their lives.

When we write a blog, an email, or even a Facebook ad, we put a point of view. This point of view attracts like-minded people. If your writing is good enough, people start gathering around. They pay attention. A conversation starts, and gradually the word spreads.

What if I don’t know what to write about

When we start, it’s quite possible, in fact, it’s quite probable, that we don’t know what to write about. But let me tell you a secret.

Successful writers have clarity

No, they don’t. Nobody has 100% clarity. The ones who succeed are the ones who start, even in the absence of clarity. Clarity comes eventually.

Write about what frustrates you

To get started, just write about what frustrates you. Vent out all the anger through your writing. The anger gives us the energy to keep writing, creating a sustainable writing practice for us.

And that is how your life will turn upside down.
